How to Make a Social Media Content Calendar (Free Simple Template)

29 September 2026 6 min read

A simple, honest way to plan a month of posts in one hour: what to post, when, and on which platform. Includes a free template you can copy.

Most people don't run out of time for social media. They run out of ideas at the moment they need them. A content calendar fixes that: you decide what to post once a week (or once a month), then you just follow the plan.

What Is a Social Media Content Calendar?

It is a simple list of upcoming posts: the date, the platform, the topic, and the status (idea, written, scheduled, posted). It can live in a notebook, a spreadsheet or an app like BeSocialist's content calendar.

Step 1: Pick 3 to 5 Content Pillars

Content pillars are the few themes you keep coming back to. For a bakery that might be: new items, behind the scenes, customer moments, tips (how to store cake), and offers. Read our guide on content pillars if you want examples for your type of business.

Step 2: Decide How Often You Will Really Post

Be honest with yourself. Three good posts a week that you keep up for months beat daily posting for two weeks and then silence. Consistency is what builds trust with your audience.

Step 3: Fill a Week Using This Template

  • Monday: tip or how-to (a pillar that helps people)
  • Wednesday: behind the scenes or a short story
  • Friday: proof: a review, a result or a before/after
  • Weekend (optional): an offer, a question, or a light post
Tip: write the first line (the hook) of each post before anything else. If the first line is boring, people scroll past. Try our free hook generator.

Step 4: Add Dates That Matter to Your Audience

Think about holidays, sale days, seasons and local events. Plan those posts two weeks early. BeSocialist shows upcoming occasions with a countdown so you never find out about a holiday or Black Friday on the day itself.

Step 5: Batch, Schedule and Relax

Write all posts for the week in one sitting, add photos, then schedule them. Batching saves a surprising amount of time because you stay in "writing mode" instead of switching tasks all day.

Step 6: Look Back Once a Month

Which posts got comments, saves and messages? Do more of those. Drop what nobody reacted to. That's the whole secret of a content strategy: plan, post, learn, adjust.
